Welcome to The Mental Breakdown and Psychreg Podcast! Today, Dr. Berney and Dr. Marshall begin a weeklong series on defense mechanisms. Originally described by Sigmund Freud, defense mechanisms are strategies we use – consciously or unconsciously – to protect ourselves from challenging and potentially traumatizing experiences. Throughout this week, we will discuss five major defense mechanisms, including:
Denial – the refusal to accept reality or facts.
Projection – the misattribution of an undesirable feeling onto another person.
Sublimation – the channeling of unacceptable feelings into more acceptable ones.
Intellectualization – the overemphasis on thinking when confronted with unacceptable feelings.
Rationalization – putting something into a different light or offering a different explanation.
We hope that you will join us each morning so that we can help you make your day the best it can be! See you tomorrow.
