We tend to consider athletes to be mentally strong, stable, and confident. We watch them compete in front of thousands of spectators, and can only imagine them as having a tremendous ability to focus and tune-out various forms of stress.
The reality, however, is that athletes experience stress. They become overwhelmed and frustrated. Mental health issues can have a profound effect on the athlete’s physical and emotional performance.
