Two Players with Concussions – philly.com

I just read this really interesting article from philly.com about two high school football players who suffered concussions early in their career. Though the boys were best friends, one stopped playing and the other continued. The article does a really nice job of talking about the decisions families must make when determining the best reaction to an injury, such as a concussion.

Don’t Forget Emotional/Behavioral Milestones

As developmental neuropsychologists, we are always a little amused when new parents talk about their children’s acquisition of developmental milestones. Oh my baby walked at 10 months, she had her first words at 13 months, and he was reading by age four. Cleary, the acquisition of motor and speech/language milestones is crucial to later life success; we applaud parents who monitor their children’s developmental milestones. We have all heard the admittedly morbid parable of boiled frogs. That is, if you put a frog in boiling water, he will jump right out. But if you put him in cool water and then heat it to a boil, the frog will remain in the water . Whether you have heard of the frogs parable or not, you are certainly aware of the story of Goldilocks and her need to find the porridge, chair, or bed that is “just right.”

Can We Come Together (Part 2)

In Part 1 of this blog, I discussed what seems to be our national hangover following this year’s presidential campaign and election. The way our political system is supposed to work is that after the people (and the Electoral College) have voted and a winner is announced, our elected officials come back together to solve problems. We may disagree on the solution, but we generally agree on what we need to do. Health care is a good example. I think it is safe to assume that everyone deserves affordable health care. The difference is in how to pay for it. The way this usually works is that the two parties negotiate and compromise until they find a solution acceptable to both sides. Read More
